“I love how we see our elders,” he admits devery jacobs about “reserve dogs” in our recent webchat. She continues: “Teen shows that I never understood growing up because of the way they talked about their grandparents or moms. Because in our communities it is a fundamental nucleus to respect our elders. Yes, we can laugh at them. Yes, there can be peculiar old people. But they continue to be the fundamental fabric of what is happening.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
He special effects comedy is created by sterlin harjo and Taika Waititi. It follows the ‘Rez Dogs’, a gang of four indigenous teenagers from a small reservation community in Oklahoma. Everyone is trying to make sense of life after the death of their group member, Daniel. Jacobs plays the leader of the group, Elora. However, in the second season, Elora leaves the reservation to fulfill Daniel’s dream of living in California. The actress says, “Because this show is a cast, it lends itself to finding different quiet moments with each of the characters. It gives each of the actors a chance to deepen their characters.”
For the second season, Jacobs joined the writers’ room. She explains, “Not only is it the only indigenous writers’ room in the industry, but it’s also a great room to be in. I’m grateful to be one of the indigenous storytellers in this industry.”
Harjo and Jacobs wrote the fourth episode of the season called ‘Mabel’. In the episode, Elora has returned to the reservation so that she can gather community around her dying grandmother. The writer reveals that “in film and television, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen the way my community suffers. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the practical closeness around death as there was in indigenous communities. For me, growing up in Kahnawake, my residence on the outskirts of Montreal, my mother is the community florist. I have been near death and have experienced death in my family. They are some of the warmest celebrations when you are surrounded by community.”
The second season also offers insight into how the ‘Rez Dogs’ are processing Daniel’s death and trying to find an end to their grief. Jacobs reflects, “It’s very rare that we see characters going through grief and what happens beyond that. It’s not that it never goes away. It leaves a lot of room for what we’re exploring in season three, which we’re shooting right now.” He also says that “one of the reasons I love comedy is that it allows us to deal with difficult conversations in a way that isn’t too onerous.”
